Obituary

David Byron Lawrence, age 87, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away February 9, 2022. David was born to William Byron and Alta Davis Lawrence in Amarillo, Texas. He learned early the skills of "fix-it" and put them to use in the family home and the Soap Box Derby. He met his future wife, Joan Irwin, in high school senior English class.  David graduated from Amarillo High School in 1953. He received a scholarship to Yale University where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. David and Joan married in 1957 and moved to Brighton, Massachusetts where David earned a masters' degree from the Sloan School of Industrial Management at MIT. He took a job in Boston with Colonial Management as an investment counselor before going to work at Millipore Corporation in Bedford Massachusetts where he worked for 20+ years, lastly as the corporate treasurer.

David was a fearless sailor. The family adopted a sailboat, Passport, a 35-foot sloop. The adventures ranged from Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts, the coast of Maine, and Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. David always had an answer to a question, a solution for a problem, a laugh to brighten the day, or a hug to soothe a hurt.

David and Joan returned to Texas after retirement and the adventures continued in Georgetown. They enjoyed the Third-Age Education programs (SAGE) at the University of Texas and Senior University in Georgetown. David had a lifelong love for music. He sang in church and school choirs and The San Gabriel Chorale. One of the highlights of SGC was going to and performing at Carnegie Hall in 2004. He was active in church, serving in choirs, member/chair of finance committees, and as a deacon. He worked on the Georgetown Playscape, served as mentor in robot competitions and taught at Camp Crestview. David enjoyed cooking and analyzing tastes, and made superb lox for the Lawrence family's traditional Christmas breakfast.

David is predeceased by his parents, W. Byron and Alta Davis Lawrence and son James I. Lawrence. David is survived by his wife, Joan, a daughter, Suzanne and husband, Curtis Cain of Katy, sons Edward of Georgetown and William of Seattle, Washington, and daughter-in-law, Philippa Lawrence of Georgetown. He also leaves 2 brothers, John and wife, Nancy Lawrence of Berkeley, California, and Benny Lawrence of Amarillo, six granddaughters, Alicia and husband, Collin Weiland of Lubbock, Texas, Margi McWherter of Frisco, Texas, Liesl Lawrence of San Antonio, Texas, Tessa and husband Garrett Wynne of Georgetown, Bonnie and husband Gavin Roberts of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Andie Lawrence of Georgetown, and many nieces and nephews.
