Obituary

David, beloved husband, father, grandfather (Grandude), brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, died Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 70 years old after a tough but valiant fight with cancer. He was born in Austin, Texas to Jim and Ruth Barr in February of 1955. He was the only boy and oldest of their four children. David's life was full of love, music, successful tech career, and dedication to his family, which he valued above all.

David is preceded in death by his parents, James and Ruth Barr, paternal grandparents, Elec and Elizabeth Barr, maternal grandparents, Isaac and Rosa Eckman, his namesake uncle David Barr (Orangeburg, SC), and uncles, Howard and Richard Barr (Orangeburg, SC), cousin Duane Barr (Orangeburg, SC), and recently, cousin Mitchell Mansfield (Kansas).

He is survived by his loving wife Linda Barr (stepchildren Brandon and Lexy Race); his first wife, Karen Barr and their beloved children, son Zachary Zezulka and wife Melody (children Lorelei, Cadence and Corban); son Nicholas Barr and wife Danielle (children Nicholas Jr, Kadence, Savannah, Liberty, Jackson and soon-to-arrive, Titus);daughter Melody Gifford (children Abbi and Peyton); daughter Cassandra Davis husband Garrett (children Brooke, Danielle, Marilyn, and Levi); sister Denise Pittard and husband David, (children Dennis and Lisa); sister Dianne Holt and husband Burns; sister Sherri Walker and husband Barry (son Stetson); aunt and uncle Lonnie and June Mansfield (daughter Teri); and aunt Joy Barr (daughters Debonie and Chrystel) and many beloved cousins.

David grew up listening to his father's bluegrass band, The Texas Bluegrass Boys which later became Grassfire. While David was always proud of his family's musical roots, his musical interest was solidly Rock 'n Roll. The Beatles and Paul Revere and the Raiders among his favorites. During David's teen years attending Lanier High School, he created his band Ichabod. In 1972 (age 17) David entered Ichabod in KOKE Radio's Battle of the Bands contest, ultimately winning the coveted 1st place. In 1979, David started his band, Heirborne, releasing 3 albums and several 45 singles. Heirborne went on to play at many notable venues and festivals in the Austin area including Steamboat and Aquafest. In his retirement David intended to release more music he had previously recorded. He had only started that endeavor when he became ill, releasing his final album in October of 2024. David got to meet two of his childhood hero's, Ringo Starr and Mark Lindsey. David won a contest that allowed him to meet Mark Lindsey of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Mark called David and they talked for almost 2 hours. He would glow telling his recollection of those events. The friendships David made through his bands and music industry lasted his lifetime.

David attended Concordia Lutheran College, however, left when he was offered an opportunity with IBM, Austin. IBM sent David to college for technology and computer advancement. Known for his hard work and dedication, David enjoyed success at IBM, being awarded numerous professional and monetary awards for his innovative ideas for the company. After 30 years with IBM, David left and spent an additional 17 years advancing the technology industry.

The light of David's world were his four children, Zachary, Nicholas, Melody, and Cassie that he shared with his first wife, Karen Phillips, who he was married to for 23 years. Although divorced, David and Karen maintained a strong friendship that centered around their children. David cherished his time with family, coaching his children's baseball teams, taking summer vacations to Myrtle Beach, and exploring Austin's famous swimming holes and landmarks. Becoming a "Grandude" was among David's most cherished experiences. He would spend every opportunity he could with his grandkids, marveling and laughing as they grew.

On June 23, 2008, David married Linda Race and became a devoted stepfather to her children. Their 17 years of marriage was filled with love and laughter. Linda appreciated and was in awe at the love and care David showed her children. David began to experience health issues that seemed to increase with time. He was officially diagnosed with multiple myeloma in September 2024. The treatments were grueling and nonstop as the cancer advanced. David admired that Linda never flinched in taking care of him, often remarking he couldn't believe how much she loved him. Regardless of his fate with cancer, David had an army behind him with Linda, his children, sisters, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

David's memory will live on through his family, music and the countless lives he's touched.
