Obituary

Cynthia Borgfeld Smith of Georgetown, Texas passed away on May 8, 2024 in her home.  No formal celebration of life is planned. Instead those close to her are encouraged to spend time with loved ones and enjoy remembering their good times with Cynthia.

Cynthia was born in New Braunfels, Texas to Monroe and Angeline (Tasto) Borgfeld. Cynthia graduated from the University of Texas and started her teaching career in Sudan, Texas in 1970 where she met another new teacher/coach, Bill Smith. After dating several months they became engaged and then married in New Braunfels in July, 1971.  The next year they taught and coached in Bandera, Texas, eventually moving to Austin where Cynthia continued teaching for several years, achieving her Master's Degree from the University of Texas.  Cynthia achieved her dream of becoming an attorney when she graduated from the University of Texas with a law degree. She was a fervent fan of the Texas Longhorns.

Cynthia was strong, independent and dearly loved her husband and her family, especially all the nieces and nephews. She and Bill were always seen as a "unit" among the family. Due to their interest and love for their nieces and nephews, they were a favorite aunt and uncle.  They were especially close to their nephew Victor and often spoke of their common interests in sports.  They traveled to attend sporting events to cheer on those kids and especially were thrilled at their graduations and marriages. As those nieces and nephews grew and their children grew, Cynthia would delight in pictures of her newest nieces and nephews and then their children. She was a great "ooo and ahh" auntie. Not only was she adored by her nephews and nieces, she was seen as part of the family by the children of her dear friends. Some of those grown children were married at the ceremony officiated by Cynthia and Bill.

Cynthia will be missed by her family and her dear friends. She often spoke of her long-time friends of over 40 years that stayed close in her life. She enjoyed sharing time with many friends in the local area. Cynthia enjoyed her group of text, talk and shop friends she could always count on.

Cynthia is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Bill Smith, her brothers-in-law Edward Powers, John Smith, Jerry Stafford and Ray Vender.

Cynthia is survived by her sister Carol Powers of Houston, Texas and her son Victor Powers. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Charlotte Smith, Patricia Vender and Nancy Kort (Kevin). She is also survived by her nieces and their husbands:  Nancy and Kevin Moore, Melissa and Kyle Butts, Carrie and Randy Biermann and Robin Stafford and also by her nephews Robert Stafford, Bill Stafford and Clifton Shelton and his wife Leisha. Additionally surviving her are 3 grand-nieces and 5 grand-nephews and 2 great-nephews and 2 great-nieces.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.
