Charles "David"
Rice
January 10, 1955 – November 27, 2019
Coach Rice is playing heavenly football, way earlier than any of us wanted.
Charles David Rice was born to the late Charles Leo Rice and Sallie Buttery Rice on January 10, 1955 in Port-Lyautey, Morocco.
He was born on a naval base, and he always kept the military mindset. From raising his daughters to coaching his players to teaching his students, one would think they were in boot camp. He was always tough, but eventually you realized that it was because he cared.
He became the "head of the household" too soon. At the age of 14, his Father, Charlie, passed away and left his mother, Sallie, widowed with 3 growing boys. From then on, David led a life of pranks with and on his brothers, Rick and Tim. Being the eldest, he usually took the punishment. At times, the brothers were best friends, but other times they were competitors. They competed in shenanigans and in sports. There was no arguing, however, that David was the most "macho" brother.
One of the most important things to mention is that after completing two years at Mesa Community College, David was offered a full academic scholarship to play football at Washington University in St. Louis making him the first person in his family to go to college. His Russian history degree was meant to be used in a position at the FBI, but he could not stay away from the football field.
On March 3, 1984, he did something he never imagined; he got married. He met Jill Jeri Rice, nee Stone, in college and never looked back. They had two daughters, Sarah and Audra, and many pets over their 30 year marriage. Jill passed away from a heroic battle with cancer in 2014, and David was never the same.
Coach Rice started his football career right out of college. He coached for many years at the college level in Arizona, and then moved on to Texas High School football, which is just as, if not more, intense.
His daughters, the " Rice Girls" grew up on his stories and macho antics. They intend to keep his memory alive with his unfiltered stories and quotes. Anyone who knew Coach Rice, was not immune to his " small talk" or " over-exaggerations". As his daughters can attest, their dad could make anything he did sound like the coolest story they ever heard.
His Grandson, Jamison, referred to his grandpa as Coach. With every knock on the door, he would jump with excitement just to see him. Usually though, Coach had gifts in hand.
In celebration of his life, and the memory of the legend that is Coach Rice, we will hold a memorial service on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Ramsey Funeral Home. The address is 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78633. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. If you knew Coach Rice, if you're on time, you're late.
If you have any unique stories of Coach Rice, his daughters, brothers, and grandson would love to hear them.
Sarah and Audra are going to take a special trip to Greece to spread the ashes of their parents where they always wanted to visit.
