Obituary

Bruce suffered a massive stroke 3 years ago and has been bedfast all this time. He loved helping around the house, and even the night before his stroke, he was walking on the roof blowing leaves out of the gutter. He was so healthy and strong, going to the gym every day, and played golf 2 or 3 times a week with a group. That's why it was such a shock when he had a massive stroke. He passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, at 11:00 PM.

Bruce William MacHardy was born to Alice Theresa Nugent MacHardy and James Robertson MacHardy on January 9, 1937, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was the youngest of three children, Alice the oldest and James Robertson Jr. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James.

Bruce graduated from St. John's Prep school in Danvers, Mass and went on to graduate from Providence (Then College...now University), in Providence, RI. He also was involved in sports and had many humorous tales about those years, too numerous to tell. Sports was his enjoyment, especially basketball and golf. He continued to play golf 3 times a week with some of his golfing friends. He still would be shooting baskets, challenging the children and grandchildren.

Later he joined the Army, and was assigned to (then) Fort Hood, Texas, where he became a Lieutenant. Bruce remained in Killeen after getting out of the military. He began his own business, Mac's Pawn and loan company in Killeen, Texas, and later Mac's Lawn Service in Arizona. He married the love of his life, Marilyn Staber in the Presbyterian Church, in Killeen, TX in 1971 and they have been married 54 years. The love of skiing and involving the children in ski school, was true joy. In fact some of the happiest moments was when his sister Alice and husband Ed and family would fly out to Aspen and would meet and ski together and have after ski evenings at dinner together at Aspen's restaurants.

There are 7 children mourning the loss of their father...Randy, Tawnya, Vernon, Paul, Kelly, Michael, and Brian, nieces, nephews and his devoted and brokenhearted wife Marilyn. In addition, Bruce leaves grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There were foreign exchange students he and his wife had for many years from China, Taiwan, and Germany that have stayed in close touch with them through many years. Bruce found great joy in RVing, and fly fishing. A trip to Rock Creek, his favorite fishing stream in Montana seemed to make his blood boil just thinking about it, and from the farthest tip of Main to San Diego, California, was his idea of RV enjoyment. Bruce enjoyed life so much and did everything he could to express that to others. Bruce loved to ski, and was an excellent skier. Skiing was so enjoyable. His sister Alice and her husband Ed and their children would fly in from the East, and meet us there, and ski Aspen and other points. That was one of our most enjoyable times. Bruce has loved and been a big part of his church and neighborhood for many years, volunteering in the prayer room, helping deliver food to those in need, and helping in other ways when asked. As one grandson said, he died as he lived, with "Amazing Inspiration." He is greatly missed by many.
