Bobby Lee "Bob" Black, 93, passed away on June 12, 2024, in Georgetown, TX.
Bob Black was born on June 29, 1930 at The Black Farm on Turkey Creek at Stone Ellis County in Western Oklahoma to Lynn and Ruth Black. He was the fifth child and the only son. After living on the farm until age 12 his family moved and lived in several small towns throughout Oklahoma. After graduating from High School in Wagoner, Oklahoma, Bob attended Oklahoma A&M University (Oklahoma State University) where he graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
After graduation from Oklahoma A&M University, Bob entered The United States Air Force. Bob's last posting was as a Special Weapons Officer at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. While in the Air Force he met and married Patricia Anne Bray. They were married in the University Christian Church in Austin.
Upon discharge from the Air Force Bob accepted a position as Design Engineer with North American Aviation, Inc. in Los Angeles, California. There he worked on the design of several fighter aircraft. While in California Bob enrolled at UCLA and graduated with a Masters Degree in Structural Mechanics.
Bob then accepted a position with the Rocketdyne Solid Propellant Rocket Facility in McGregor, Texas. While at Rocketdyne Bob became manager of Engineering in the Advanced Projects Department. While living in McGregor Bob and Pat adopted Beverly, then Gregory and finally Michael from the Edna Gladney Home in Fort Worth.
Bob then left the Aerospace Industry and after an intermediate stop or two accepted a position with Pool Offshore Company located in Houston and New Orleans. The company designed, built, and operated offshore drilling and workover rigs. While at Pool Company Bob became director of Offshore Engineering and Construction Projects.
In 1996 Bob retired while living in New Orleans, Louisiana. After a few years of retirement Bob and Pat moved to Sun City in Georgetown. Bob was an active volunteer with the Caring Place and the Georgetown Library. He also belonged to the Stained Glass Club, Hunting and Fishing Club and the Sun City Democrats. Bob and Pat were known as nomads by their friends having lived in ten different cities, including Southampton, England and Aberdeen, Scotland before moving to Sun City.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Beverly Smith and husband Eric; son, Greg Black; grandsons: Steven Smith, Sean Smith and wife Lili; great-granddaughters: Araceli Smith and Lyra Smith; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Black; son, Michael Black; his parents, Lynn and Ruth Black; sisters: Jewel, Wana, Genevieve and Bamba.
A time of visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024 in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Elder Scott Click of Brentwood Church of Christ officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Reception Hall of Ramsey Funeral Home.
Bob will be laid to rest with his wife, Patricia, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024 at the Central Texas State Veteran Cemetery with Military Honors to be rendered by the United States Air Force.
