Anne Lorraine
Shanley
June 27, 1928 – July 31, 2025
Mrs. Anne Lorraine (Hafner) Shanley, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025 in Georgetown, Texas, at the age of 97, surrounded by her loving children. Born on June 27, 1928 in the Bronx, New York, her life spanned nearly a century of remarkable change and enduring traditions, and she embraced each chapter with warmth, humor, and an unwavering spirit.
Anne was predeceased by her ever-loving husband, Walter Shanley, eldest son, Edward Shanley, and siblings Charlie Hafner, Andy Hafner, and Mary Kopf. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Michael Shanley (Judy) (Campbell), Kathleen Boyd (Thomas) (Georgetown), and Allyne "Lynne" Shanley (San Jose). She was known for her love and compassion for her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and friends.
Anne treasured many memories made with her three grandchildren, Rachel Shanley, Lena Shanley Sullivan (Bryan) and Camden Anne Boyd. Granny made sure time with her was fun, even taking the girls to the park, McDonalds, the Disney Store, and the movies when they were supposed to be home sick.
In the early 1970s, Anne began what would become a beloved venture—Granny Annie's Jams. With care and creativity, she crafted homemade jams that became staples at local boutiques and community events. Her passion for preserving fruit was matched only by her joy in sharing it with others. Even into her later years, she continued to make and sell her jams, delighting customers with both her products and her cheerful presence.
Before launching her jam business, Anne dedicated nearly two decades to food service in the Cupertino School District. She was the quintessential cafeteria lady and could tell you the unit cost of any dish she prepared. Anne retired in 1988 and was remembered fondly by colleagues and students alike for her dedication, kindness, and delicious "wacky" cake.
Anne was deeply involved in her faith community as a member of St. Joseph Church in Cupertino. There, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered regularly at church bingo nights—an activity she cherished not only for the game (and the winnings) but for the camaraderie it brought. She especially loved greeting everyone and selling cherry bells before Saturday night bingo. She continued playing bingo regularly after moving to Georgetown, TX, and made new friends wherever she played.
Anne's hobbies reflected her generous heart and creative hands: knitting and crocheting gifts for loved ones, playing bingo with friends old and new, and continuing to make jam well into her nineties. Her sense of humor—often silly and always endearing—made her a joy to be around. She was serious, though, when it came to playing games. Besides bingo, she most enjoyed rummikub and 5 crowns because playing them "you had to think."
Anne's compassion touched countless lives. When you talked with her, she gave you her full attention. She had a gift for making people feel welcome — with a laugh, a jar of jam, or a treat for her neighbors' dogs — and was truly loved by everyone she met.
May Anne's memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire kindness in others.
