Alma Eline
Halverson
September 22, 1931 – November 25, 2021
Alma Eline Halverson of Georgetown, TX, formerly of River Falls, Wisconsin passed away at 90 years old on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021. She was born September 22, 1931, in Fergus Falls, MN to Nels and Alma Langsjoen. Growing up as the youngest of eight children during the Great Depression and WWII, Alma's father was president of Northwestern College in Fergus Falls until it closed in 1932. Nels moved the family to St. Peter, Minnesota, where he took a faculty position teaching German, French and Spanish in the Foreign Language Department at Gustavus Adophus College. Dr. Langsjoen later became Department Chairman and held that position until he passed away in 1958.
As a child, Alma, nicknamed "Doopy" by her brothers, was an avid swimmer at the city pool located across the street from their home on 410 N 4 th Street. She won several swimming awards, most notably for diving and breaststroke. In High School, she was an honor roll student, cheerleader, and homecoming queen. She was also in the concert band, orchestra, choir, and plays. She attended Gustavus Adolphus and was an honor student as a freshman. She married Jerry Halverson, also of St. Peter, in 1949 and began raising a family.
After living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alma and Jerry moved to River Falls, WI in 1954. All six of their children graduated from River Falls Senior High School. In 1963, Alma and Jerry built the Lamplight Inn, just South of River Falls, with Jerry's father, Adolph Sr. and brother, Adolph Jr. For a period, Jerry managed it while Alma was the hostess. After selling the Lamplight in 1968, Alma worked at the River Falls State Bank (1970-1972), then owned the Town Shoppe Fashions, a women's clothing store in River Falls between 1973-1977. They bought a cabin on Pipe Lake in 1973 and later sold it in 1978 to build the first of their two 30-unit apartment complexes. From 1981 to 1984, Alma worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Purchasing Department at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. In 1986, Jerry and Alma began spending their winters at their second home in Sun City West, Arizona. They moved there permanently in 2000 until Jerry passed away in 2012. Alma then moved to Georgetown, TX where she spent her final years near her oldest son, Guy, and family.
Alma loved spending as much time as possible at the cabin on Pipe Lake, and later at Wild Goose Lake, Wisconsin. She was an avid reader, loved her flowers, and was an extraordinary cook. She had the uncanny ability for "making do" seem elegant. During her retirement years, Jerry and Alma enjoyed traveling, evening walks, and golfing in Sun City West, Arizona. Alma will be remembered as a kind and gentle person who always placed the needs of others above her own.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Nels and Alma Langsjoen, her six brothers, Dr. Arne Langsjoen, Dr. Per "Flit" Langsjoen, Dr. Odin "Odie" Langsjoen, Judge Leif Langsjoen, Dr. Verner "Beanie" Langsjoen, Dr. Ralph "Tonk" Langsjoen, sister Gertrude "Trudy" Langsjoen-Rodine, husband of 62 years, Jerry Halverson, and grandsons Jack Jenkins and Dane Halverson.
She is survived by her six children, Guy (Roberta) Halverson of Georgetown, TX; Gay Halverson of Coupeville, WA; Scott (Jean) Halverson of Prescott, WI; Glen (Jamie) Halverson of Green Valley, AZ; Eve (Neil) Carroll of Coupeville, WA; Lois (Todd) Jenkins of River Falls, WI; 15 grandchildren Noah, Aaron, Samuel, Jacob, Stefanie, Charlotte, Whitney, Andy, Eric, Jackie, Cassandra, Torin, Laurel, Nels, and Tanner; 14 great grandchildren, Teagen, Avery, Evan, Dylan, Ashton, Zachary, Lincoln, Linnea, Anders, Lyle, Edwyn, Kenneth, Vaelan, and Atticus.
The funeral will be held at 10am on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at Ramsey Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas and officiated by Senior Pastor Walt Pohland of Faith Lutheran Church. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and loving caregivers at The Reserve at Georgetown and Wesleyan Hospice.
